My first thoughts about air display.
As I said before air display is an app that turns the iPad into a second screen for the Mac or PC as long as they are on the same wireless network. So far it’s a pretty good thing. Setup was fast and easy. I downloaded the software on my Mac and the app on my iPad. Once this was done I had to reboot the Mac. Then I activated the app on the iPad and clicked the new air display icon in the menu bar. It found my iPad and I had a second wireless screen. The next task was to arrange the screen. This is the same process that you would follow for a regular external monitor.
So far so good.
So now it’s time to test it out. First iTunes and a movie. Very fast and smooth. I knew this would be fast and it carried over to Safari, Firefox, and Chrome. Dreamweaver and Eclipse are fast as well. So far the apps I use the most reacted well when being pushed wirelessly to the iPad. The first bad news came when I got home. Pushing video like Hulu or my tv tuner to my iPad, produces watchable shows, but you can see the jitters and stutters in the quality. I think I can get used to it, but I am going try to tweak my network if possible. The only application that is unusable so far is parallels and windows seven. It could be the video settings I have setup or it could just be the fact, that I’m using windows. Ha ha ha.
Is this app worth the ten dollars? I think it is. I can use it as a second monitor at work and home as long as I can deal with the stutters of video. I am going to have to see how the video from Hulu looks over the work network. In other words I like this application. It is a great tool for work related tasks and I think things can only get better.
